Obituary
Carl Spielman, passed away peacefully on Aug 28th in Delray Beach, Fl surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by children Larry (Melany) Spielman, Linda (Bob Listernick) Spielman, and Nancy Spielman; grandchildren Samantha (Jason) Silver, Molly (Jarred) Beckerman, Jesse Listernick, Zoe Listernick, Jennifer (Rich) Elemen; great grandchild, Dylan Silver. Carl was born in Brooklyn, NY, served in the US Air Force and graduated from the City College of New York. He married Carol in 1949, moved to Chicago, and settled in Highland Park where they lived for the next 60 years. They raised their three children, made lifelong friends, and formed deep ties to their two synagogues. Carl was a partner and owner of two successful furniture businesses for over 30 years. He was ethical and loyal in everything he undertook. He was a proud supporter of Carol’s political career and was always by her side at temple or important political events. They were partners for 70 years and faced all of life’s best moments and challenges together. They were our strongest support and were always there for their children. Beyond the centrality and love of family, Carl’s greatest joy was golf. For over 50 years he played with friends at Sunset Valley Golf Course in leagues, winning awards, and even grabbing a hole in one on the 11th hole in 2002. In June 2020 Carl moved to Florida to live with Nancy for his wonderful last chapter. Carl’s generosity, warmth, directness, welcoming and easy spirit, sense of humor, smile, and complete dedication to family defined him. We love him beyond words and will miss him terribly. Graveside service Wednesday 2 PM at Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Highland Park Public Library (hplibrary.org). Carl was a wonderful storyteller, a kind hearted man and good friend. We loved having dinners together with Carl, Carol and B’nai Torah friends. May his memory be a blessing and comfort to his family.
